MIT Physics Course Introduction

I just downloaded this whole Physics course from MIT and it's really very interesting! The internet has really made the world a smaller and more accessible place. MIT is a top university in the world and now their lectures are all available for everyone who do not go there to view and learn. This takes learning without boundaries to a whole new standard.

Will be posting up videos from the lecture series in the near future. In the meantime, do take time to listen to the introduction by Dr Walter Lewin.

Genetically Modified

In fact, much of our food we consume daily has been GM.

Rice for example is mostly GM, and farmers have been doing it since the dawn of agriculture.

Farmers cross pollinate domestic rice with wild rice to reproduce certain genetic characteristic in them, for eg, the fragrance and resistance to certain pests.

Good or bad?
I guess its up to individual tastes and preferences.

CO2

Wow! great fact.

Wonder if there are more trees in the world than there are humans.

Electric fence

By 302 students....HAHAS

Clip taken from UK Show, Brainiac, Season 1 Episode 4.
Electric Fence Experiment

Richard Hammond shows the Brainiacs how fun Electricity can be.

Also, yes, if you are in the air when the electricity goes through, you don't get a shock. You don't get shocked if the circuit (box to fence to person to ground to box) doesn't complete.

On top of that, the end where he ALMOST shakes Hammond's hand, he doesn't. Also, the slight gap in time between feet hitting ground and the shock can be attributed to the 1-2 second delay caused by the fence not being constantly on.

From Wikipedia,

A shape memory alloy (SMA, also known as a smart metal, memory alloy, or muscle wire) is an alloy that "remembers" its shape, and can be returned to that shape after being deformed, by applying heat to the alloy.

Sec 3 Science Project 2009!

Yeah! It's the annual Pythagoras' Switch Project. I am beginning to look forward to this project as the students ideas are becoming more and more innovative as the years proceed. My aim to be able to flood youtube with the students' videos this year and hopefully come up with some ideas for TKK Young Inventors' award!

And finally one project from last year!

Have fun!

Heavy Newspaper

Definitely must try this at home! Pressure is a new topic that is added to the syllabus of Combined Science(Phy/Chem) and it is interesting to note that the value of atmospheric pressure is 100 000 Pa! That is a super huge number and it means the force per unit area is 100 000 N! That is an equivalent of 10 000 kg object sitting in 1 square metre of area!

Our Virgin Post!!!

Yo! Wassup! We are a group of Gen X teachers trying to reach out to the Gen Y students in our school. And we thought... hey maybe this song will bridge that gap.... to elevate us to the status of coolness in our students' eyes. Yeah man!!!! We did our research (yup, we teachers are still studying) and we decided to start a blog that will be the mother of all blogs!!! Muahahahaha!!!! So look out for this blog! More exciting and fun stuff coming up!!
